Sneaky Wedding Planning At Work

It’s hard not to share every detail about your wedding with every person that you see, it’s understandable, it’s a massive event in your life, planning it will take you on a journey of many highs and lows but unfortunately not everyone is going to be as excited as you.  There comes a point when hearing about all the details of your wedding are going to annoy people, especially the people you work with because you’re likely to see these people most days.

For some people it’s easy to separate their work and their personal life, for others they mix seamlessly and they intend to invite everyone they work with. Another problem you might have is that if you work a 9 to 5 job the only time you will be able to contact your wedding suppliers is within these hours or on a saturday.

If you work in a team and everyone does the same job, it can be difficult to be seen as still pulling your weight while you’re constantly on the phone organising wedding flowers, discussing wedding jewellery and having wedding planning discussions with your husband to be instead of working. If you’re wedding is the only thing you can take about while at work, you’ll find eventually your colleagues will stop listening, they may even start making snide comments or talk about your self absorption behind your back. Sometimes the only time you’ll be able to make plans for your wedding will be within you own work hours, so to make sure you’re not annoying your colleagues try to make these phone calls on your own time such as your breaks or your lunch hour.

If you can ask others to make these phone calls for you such as your fella (which for most isn’t probably a great idea), your mum or your bridesmaids. If you can, try to use email more than the phone, this has two benefits, firstly as long as your computer screen doesn’t face other people, they won’t know that you’ve sent a non work related email.  Secondly by writing instructions in an email or confirming things, you have something down on paper so to speak.  That way if there was any confusion to what was agreed, it’s easy to print it out and show it, then to try to remember what was said in a phone call. Some times you will have to meet your wedding suppliers, if it’s not possible to do this outside of your normal working hours then your only other option is to take a day of work.  It’s better to take a days leave instead of throwing a sickie because you might get caught.

If you do have to take a day off work, then try to be organised and spend your time effectively.  Organised as many appointments as you can for that particular day and do it in a way that you’re not constantly travelling across town from one appointment to another. Remember while your colleagues might be happy to hear about your wedding plans, they won’t want the details, try not to spend your entire day taking about planning your wedding.  Make sure you remember to show interest in their lives too
