A Guide to Diamond Clarity Grade

In order to buy the right diamond jewelry, your should be aware of a few things first before doing so. You want to find that gorgeous piece of diamond jewelry that you will adore and be worth every penny that you spend on it.

As you probably have heard or read, there are what’s known as the four C’s of diamonds. Understanding the four C’s is critical when analyzing diamond jewelry to determine its value, and ultimately decide if you should purchase it or not.

Clarity

Diamond clarity is simply the number and size of the blemishes that are on just about every diamond out there. However, these imperfections are so small that one can barely even notice them. Therefore, the appearance of the diamond is virtually unaffected by them. Very few diamonds made each year are considered flawless, and the ones that are out there are almost invaluable.

Knowing what the diamond clarity information is regarding piece of diamond jewelry allows you to understand its true worth and whether or not it is right for you. The image below is the GIA grading scale and an explanation of each.

High Grade

Diamond clarity grade is what is given to a diamond after being examined for blemishes. When a diamond receives a high grade, it is classified as “FL” which is extremely rare and expensive. When it has no flaws to the naked eye, it is also referred to as “eye clean.” This is important when looking to get the best value for a diamond. The ranking can also be based on how rare a diamond is, and not so much how beautiful or valuable it is.

The fewer flaws, the higher the diamond clarity grade and the more valuable the diamond piece will be.

Middle Grade

The level below is middle grade. These are diamonds that have some imperfections, but generally still aren’t able to be seen by the naked eye. These provide really good value since they are not quite as expensive, while having flaws that can’t been seen without 10x magnifying loupe.

Low Grade

Thee low grade diamonds have imperfections that are visible to the naked eye. Most reputable stores don’t carry these diamonds for sale.

Diamond clarity is probably the easiest of the four C’s to understand. If you want a flawless diamond, it is very rare and is the most valuable diamond out there. You will find some jewelry stores that carry flawless diamonds, but not many. Always be on the safe side and get a certificate of authenticity to show that it is the real deal.

  • I really liked this post. You describe this topic very well. Owning a diamond is capturing a piece of history. The diamond is over three billion years in age, formed in the earth’s interior and shot to the surface by extraordinary volcanoes. It is carbon in concentrated form, composed solely of carbon — the chemical element fundamental to all life. A diamond is a natural element full of passion and brilliance. The cut of a stone is very important when searching out the perfect diamond. The shape of the stone you are interested in, (Round Brilliant, Princess, Emerald, Radiant, etc) will effect which cut is best for each diamond. Round Brilliant diamonds are affected most by the cut. There is a belief in the diamond industry that the round brilliant can be the “Ideal Cut,” to provide the most brilliance and scintillation back to the viewer’s eye.
